Thread: 2020 Annual East Coast Track Day

The race tracks have restrictions around drone use. I will see if I can get the okay for this. That would be very cool!

Eric, Not only did our insurance cost double this year since CMP no longer offers it (now through K&K Insurance), but they are also anti-drone. Here is their response.

"We cannot add drone coverage to the coverage that was quoted to you. If you are needing insurance for Drone Coverage you will need to seek coverage elsewhere.

Sorry I can’t be of more help there

What a bummer! The reason I was thinking of doing it is I came across some video of a CMP event that was shot by drone. Apparently it has changed. The video was awesome, overhead shots of cars going through the final turns onto the front straight.

Oh well.. will still try to get some good video regardless.

Bring the drone, what's the worst thing that can happen, someone asks us to stop shooting vid? Plus, if the drone crashes through a windshield and embeds in someone's chest, we have an anesthesiologist and a surgeon on site!
    Over 3000lbs=boring. 0-60 over 4 seconds=boring. Under 1g=boring. Noble, not boring.

I would think the drone restriction would be for anywhere immediately above the race track itself, dont see why you couldnt have it flying overhead but not directly above the cars driving..

Just ran Road Atlanta this weekend. Drizzle... only got one clean session and there was traffic so didn't even get a full clean lap. It was fun all the same!

I DID play around with some interesting stuff regarding the upcoming CMP event. I am getting a GoPro shortly (b- day present) but have been learning use from YouTube and a friend who uses to data log track video. I am going to continue to practice with my drone (have actually gotten pretty good in just a couple weeks) on the outside chance "someone" shot some video from somewhere at some place that could look cool...

Also: it turns out you can actually get some reasonable video just using a smart phone and TrackAddict app: http://racerender.com/TrackAddict/Features.html I also got a RAM phone mount and it is pretty stable. Yes, there is some shake when window mounted.. but it is not awful. Mount: https://www.rammount.com/shop-all/ra...p/phone-mounts . I got the x grip suction cup window mount for around $30ish online. Other than some mild video motion, the mount is remarkably stable. You then take the video and data files off your phone and xfer to your PC and use RaceRender (also found on TrackAddict site) to add various details. Yes, you can synch this to various OBD port and GoPro stuff.. but just the plain old smart phone stuff comes out pretty good. Publishing a video is limited to 3 minutes in free version, but you can analyze and look at entire session on phone (assuming you have enough memory.. I did have to clear out some stuff). Anyways, it's a pretty good deal (free) if you already have an OK phone mount.

Here's an example of what you can produce: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6tymczfe_E

I will try to get some good in car video of other folks on track and will hopefully make some nice videos after the event!!

How is everything looking for this event? seems they are getting stricter and stricter by day as to gatherings in South Carolina...

Track still open for our event. We are taking it a day at a time and of course, we will exercise social distancing if needed. If we have to cancel, we will offer refund or apply to new date. Deposit is on the track already. Everyone should sign up before April 1 to be eligible for a rebate of excess funds for the event. No risk for everyone. Will keep you updated. Thank you. Dave
