    Are zerk fittings still used?
    If you drill how do you keep swarf out of the joint?

    No need.
    Rubber bushings don't need lubricated.

    The ball joints are sealed, but (on my car anyway) the rubber boots sometimes get torn. Good news is the ball joints are cheap and pretty simple to change if you have the correct tool. I do have the tool, and you live just up the street.
