Thread: Battery?

  1. #1

    Default Battery?

Welp, it's that time (wife left passenger door open a crack, after a week, killed battery for the n'th time).

Has anyone tried a LiFePO4 battery yet? Prices seem to have fallen quite dramatically over the last year or two, so they're not all that much more than

    I'm considering a Ballistic Performance 12 or 16 cell.

The 12-cell already has more juice than my current battery (when new) yet weighs 2.5 lbs. The 16-cell weighs 3 lbs.

The motorcycle guys seem to love them more than the other popular choice (Shorai).

Yeah I've been looking at something like this, esp since now there are some that will make the Porsche options list (for the GT3). But my understanding is you want the cranking amps somewhere north of 900, and the amp/hr rating near 60. This one in particular (the 16) is 500 and 28, respectively -- in fact their website suggests it's capable up to 1800cc/4 cyl. Looks like they are more used in motorcyles to date. But the price is fantastic...I had been looking at Voltphreaks but they're on another planet cost-wise...

I've been using a 22lb $80 East Penn Deka ETX30L (rebadged by Braille as the $180 B3121) on the Noble that's 26Ah and 400 CCA. It starts up the Noble just fine, even after sitting for 2 weeks (stock alarm setup).

LiFePo4 is better with deep cycling than AGM or gel.

Wow, I've been getting advice to get double that, good to know you're not needing that. Maybe for cold weather?

    Perhaps.

BTW, I used an ETX20L for awhile too, and my Noble started just fine. It only lasted about 10 days (without driving) though.

    That's 17.5Ah and and 310 CCA.

I don't have one in the Noble but have one in a sportbike. Incredibly light and has been faithful in start up.

this is the strongest most reliable light battery we have tried.
we actually used the next smaller one in the GTR, it would crank through all the compression test, the the CLT's then crank to prime oil system and still show no signs of laying down.

Braille uses A123 lithium polymer cells, I believe, much like most of the better LiFePo4 battery choices on the market.

I guess it's a matter of sizing. The Ballistic EVO2 12-cell is like the Braille ML7S.

The 16-cell comes in at $240, the 12-cell at $170.

Found the EVO2 16-cell for less at $224.95 shipped (if you're not in CA):

They make kind of a cool balance charger for the battery too, that plugs right into the center port (between the posts) on the battery.

LiPo batteries are very powerful and you need to balance the cells. They are also prone to blowing up if not used properly.
